Litigation is a document problem before it is an argument

Any matter of size involves thousands of documents that must be reviewed, coded, indexed and turned into a chronology before anybody can think about the argument. It is genuinely important work and it is genuinely repetitive.

Firms handle it by putting junior solicitors on it, which is expensive, or by not doing it properly, which is worse.

A dedicated support assistant does the volume under supervision. The judgement — relevance calls at the margin, privilege, strategy — stays with your solicitors, where it must.

What they support

  • Discovery indexing — Documents catalogued, dated, sourced and indexed to your protocol so the set is navigable.
  • First-pass document review — Documents coded against your review protocol, with anything uncertain escalated rather than decided.
  • Chronology building — A dated chronology assembled from the document set with source references, updated as documents arrive.
  • Authorities and research support — Cases and legislation located and summarised factually for your solicitor, with the reasoning left to them.
  • Brief and bundle preparation — Court books and briefs to counsel assembled, indexed, paginated and cross-referenced.
  • Precedent bank upkeep — Your precedents organised, versioned and tagged so fee earners find the right one.
  • Matter file hygiene — Files kept in order as the matter runs, so nothing is hunted at the wrong moment.

The practice-of-law line

Supervised support work travels. Legal judgement does not, and privilege calls in particular must stay with your solicitors.

  • Privilege determinationsNever delegated. A support assistant flags candidates; a solicitor decides.
  • Relevance calls at the marginClear-cut coding to protocol is fine. Judgement calls are escalated.
  • Legal advice or opinionNot in any form, to anyone.
  • Court appearances and filingSolicitor only.

Questions

Frequently asked

How closely do they need supervising?
Closely at first, on the coding protocol specifically — the value of a first-pass review is entirely dependent on the protocol being applied consistently. Sample and check the first few hundred documents, and the checking becomes spot-checking.
Can they work in our discovery platform?
Usually, and platform-specific experience is worth asking about on the call. Where the platform is unfamiliar, expect two to three weeks before they are quick in it.
Is offshore document review a confidentiality risk?
Manage it exactly as you would for any external reviewer: NDA, per-matter access, work inside your platform so nothing is downloaded, and attribution on every action. Your professional obligations do not change with location — the controls are what matter.
How much does it cost?
From $14/hr + GST full-time — up to 70% less than a local hire, with no placement fee. Run your numbers →
Full-time, part-time or fewer hours?
Forty hours a week is our standard engagement and twenty is common. Below that we look at fifteen, ten or even five hours to get a role started, priced accordingly — a smaller engagement costs a little more per hour because the recruiting and management effort is the same. Plenty of clients begin at ten hours and grow the role once they see what comes off their desk.
Is there a minimum term?
Three months, then month to month. It's the same runway you'd give a new local hire to learn your systems, your clients and your standards — and the team members who get a fair run are the ones who stay for years. There are no exit penalties at any point, and if the issue is the person rather than the role, the first-week refund and free replacement cover that separately.
How do you handle confidentiality?
The same way you'd treat any remote team member. Every placement signs an NDA and a confidentiality clause before day one, and they work inside your systems — your email, your CRM, your file storage — so you control what they can see and can revoke access instantly. No client data is stored on our side.
